This hands-on class is designed for the busy person who wants easy to make pizza and much more. Participants will make a range of flat savoury breads, including Italian style Pizza, Tarte Flambee, Sicilian Savoury Bread and Focassia. There is nothing as pleasing as the aroma and taste of freshly baked savoury breads - and your family will agree. Tea and coffee will be served when you arrive.
PIZZA: Italian immigrants introduced pizza to America in the late 1800's. The first pizzeria was established in New York in 1895 and initially consumption was confined to the Italian population. American soldiers stationed in Italy at the end of the last war "discovered" pizza and when they returned to America they brought with them a taste and appreciation for pizza. After World War II pizza became increasingly popular in America and the first commercially frozen pizza was introduced in 1949. Since then the International popularity of pizza has snowballed
TARTE FLAMBÉE (French) / FLAMMEKUECHE(Alsace) / FLAMMKUCHEN (German): This is an Alsatian dish composed of thin bread dough rolled out in a circle or a rectangle, which is covered with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon lardons. It is one of the most famous gastronomical specialties of the region. Depending on the region, this dish can be called in Alsatian flammekueche, in German Flammkuchen, or in French tarte flambée. There are many variations of the original recipe, in terms both of the dough and of the garnish.
FOCACCIA: Focaccia is a flat oven-baked Italian bread product similar in style and texture to pizza doughs. It may be topped with herbs or other ingredients.
